The main functions of lifepo4 battery management system

    2025-01-22
    BMS
Lithium iron phosphate battery (LFP) is a new type of lithium-ion battery with high energy density, long cycle life, high safety and stability. It is widely used in electric vehicles, energy storage systems and battery packs.
In order to effectively manage and control lithium iron phosphate batteries and improve their service life and performance, it is necessary to establish a complete lifepo4 battery management system (BMS).

The lifepo4 battery management system (BMS) is the core component of the lithium iron phosphate battery system. Its main functions include real-time monitoring and control of battery cell voltage, temperature, current and other parameters, as well as control of battery charging, discharging, protection and other operations.

Composition of lifepo4 battery management system

lifepo4 battery management system Hardware Architecture

    Hardware Architecture

The lifepo4 battery management system consists of hardware and software. The hardware part includes sensors, battery modules, communication modules and controllers.
Sensors are used to monitor battery voltage, current, temperature and S0C parameters.
Battery modules are used to store battery data and control battery status.
Communication modules are used to communicate with external devices.
Controllers are used to control the battery charging and discharging process.

    Software Architecture

The lifepo4 battery management system software includes data acquisition and analysis module, control strategy module and fault handling module.
The data acquisition and analysis module is responsible for reading battery data from sensors, processing and analyzing it to obtain battery status information.
The control strategy module is responsible for formulating appropriate charging and discharging strategies according to the battery status to extend the battery life and improve its performance.
The fault handling module is responsible for monitoring battery failures and taking timely measures when failures occur to avoid battery damage or safety accidents.

    Data acquisition and processing

The data collected by the sensors of the lifepo4 battery management system needs to be converted to digital through an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and stored in the battery module through a controller.
At the same time, the data also needs to be processed and analyzed to obtain battery status information.
Common processing and analysis methods include filtering, calibration, S0C estimation, and health status estimation.

The basic function of  lifepo4 battery management system

    lifepo4 battery management system mainboard

(1). Monitor the working condition of the single cell

    Such as detecting the voltage, charge and discharge current, and ambient temperature of the battery pack of each single cell;

    (2). Protect the battery

To avoid shortening the battery life and battery damage under extreme conditions.

Although lithium iron phosphate batteries are still safe under conditions of abuse such as short circuit, overcharge, extrusion, and needle puncture, they will have a great impact on the cycle life of the battery.
The production process of lithium iron phosphate batteries is relatively complex, and the consistency difference of single cells is greater than that of sealed valve-regulated lead-acid batteries, which causes the voltage of individual single cells in the battery pack to rise rapidly in the later stage of charging. As a result, the life of the lithium iron phosphate battery pack is shortened or damaged.

In order to avoid the above phenomenon, the lifepo4 battery management system is needed to ensure the safety and reliability of the battery.

Main functions of the lifepo4 battery management system

    (1).Overvoltage protection

When the charging voltage of a single battery exceeds the allowable value, charging is stopped immediately and the connection between the charging device and the battery pack is disconnected

    (2).Overdischarge alarm

When the discharge voltage of a single battery is lower than the warning value, an alarm is issued

    (3).Over-discharge protection

When the discharge voltage of a single battery is lower than the protection value, the discharge is stopped immediately, the connection between the power-consuming device and the battery pack is disconnected, and an alarm is issued

    (4).Over-current alarm

When the current input or output of the battery pack exceeds the warning value, an alarm is issued

    (5).Short-circuit protection

When a short circuit occurs in the battery pack, the discharge is stopped immediately, the connection between the power-consuming device and the battery pack is disconnected, and an alarm is issued

    (6).Over-temperature alarm

When the battery temperature or ambient temperature exceeds the warning value, an alarm is issued.

    (7).Over-temperature protection

When the ambient temperature or the internal temperature of the battery pack exceeds the protection value, the charging or power-consuming equipment will be disconnected from the battery pack immediately, accompanied by an alarm prompt. When the ambient temperature or the internal temperature of the battery pack returns to the allowable value, the battery management function can be restored manually or automatically, but it will not affect the battery discharge function

(8).Estimate the battery pack SOC (State Of Charge)

I.e.,the remaining battery capacity. Keep the SOC within a reasonable range to prevent damage to the battery due to overcharging or over-discharging, and predict the remaining battery capacity at any time

(9).Balance the cells in the battery pack

Due to the complex manufacturing process of lithium iron phosphate batteries and the relative activity of lithium ions, the voltage of the cells in the battery pack is inconsistent.

Balanced charging of the cells in the battery pack can effectively extend the service life of the battery pack and greatly improve the operating efficiency of the battery pack (this function can be increased or decreased according to user requirements).

    (10).Parallel communication port

Provides an interface for communication with the base station monitoring system, transmits and displays information such as battery pack status and SOC, and realizes remote monitoring and management intervention.
    lifepo4 battery management system
The lifepo4 battery management system (BMS) is the core component of battery protection and management.
It not only ensures the safe and reliable use of the battery, but also fully utilizes the battery's performance and extends its service life.
As a backup power source for communications, the management system plays a bridge role between the high-voltage DC power supply and the battery. The requirements for the battery management system must meet the requirements of the communication power supply system, so the safety management mode of the battery management system is crucial to the safety of the battery.
