What is a blade battery? What are the advantages of blade batteries in new energy?
Blade Battery, an innovative lithium-ion battery technology product, was launched on the market by BYD in March 2020. The battery adopts a CTP module-less structure design. By assembling the cells directly into the battery pack, it eliminates the intermediate components in traditional battery modules, thereby significantly increasing the energy density and overall capacity of the battery pack.

    How Blade Batteries Work

In terms of working principle, blade batteries are similar to traditional lithium-ion batteries. During the charging process, lithium ions start from the positive electrode and move to the negative electrode through the electrolyte, releasing electrons at the same time; the discharge process is the opposite. The unique design of the blade battery allows lithium ions to move faster, thereby improving the charging and discharging speed and efficiency of the battery. This, like all other lithium-ion batteries, is part of the basic working principle of lithium-ion batteries. The main innovation of the blade battery lies in its structural breakthrough, which, as the author discussed earlier, is a major step forward in the industry's understanding of blade batteries.

Advantages and features of blade batteries

    High energy density

The blade battery uses lithium iron phosphate material. This advanced technology enables it to provide a longer-lasting power supply at the same weight. In other words, if you compare the blade battery with other types of batteries of the same weight, you will find that the blade battery can take you further. From the perspective of the raw material standard system, its power density is as high as 150kWh/kg.

    High safety

The combination of single cell arrays is extremely safe and reliable. In BYD's rigorous testing, the blade battery passed the "needle puncture test", which is the "Safety Requirements for Power Batteries for Electric Vehicles" (GB 38031-2020). After the steel needle vertically punctures the single cell, it must be observed for 1 hour. It is considered to have passed only if there is no fire or explosion. This proves that the blade battery does not have the risk of spontaneous combustion, greatly improving the safety of electric vehicles.

    Long life

In addition to safety, the service life of the battery is also an important indicator to measure its quality. The blade battery made of lithium iron phosphate also performs well in this regard. It has a longer cycle life, which means you can use this battery for a longer time without worrying about frequent replacement. The service life of the blade battery is usually more than 10 years.

    Disadvantages of blade batteries

    High cost of battery maintenance

Cost of battery maintenance. One of the common problems of CTP solutions is blade batteries. Its battery pack is composed of individual cells. These cells are not directly placed in the battery pack, but are installed by various connectors and fixed by thermal conductive structural glue. This means that it is difficult to repair a cell if it is broken or hit in the later stage. The only feasible repair method is to destroy the strength of the glue through ultra-low temperature, and then remove the damaged blade cell from the battery pack.
    Disadvantages of blade batteries

    Poor performance at low temperatures

Blade batteries have poor performance in low temperature environments, and their capacity and discharge rate will be affected. After all, blade batteries are a type of lithium iron phosphate battery, and naturally inherit some of the shortcomings of lithium iron phosphate batteries. As we all know, the performance of lithium iron phosphate batteries will be greatly reduced at low temperatures. For example, at -20°C, the capacity of lithium iron phosphate batteries can only reach 80%. Although BYD uses a thermal management system on blade batteries to control the internal temperature of the battery at an optimal operating temperature, this only alleviates the impact of low temperatures on the battery to a certain extent, and there will not be a qualitative leap. This is really not very friendly to northern users, and the battery attenuation in winter is the same as that of lithium iron phosphate batteries, and the service life in winter is not as good as that of ternary lithium batteries.

Advantages of blade batteries in energy storage

    1. Structural strength and safety:

The design of blade batteries gives them higher structural strength and safety, which is suitable for the high safety requirements in the energy storage field.

    2. Energy density:

The design of blade batteries allows more battery cells to be accommodated in the same volume, thereby increasing energy density and meeting the energy density requirements in the energy storage field.

    3. Heat dissipation design:

Blade batteries use a more uniform heat dissipation design, which effectively reduces the temperature of the battery pack, extends the battery life, and reduces the construction cost of the energy storage system

    Summary of blade battery applications

In summary, blade batteries have opened up new paths in the electric vehicle and energy storage industries with their innovative design and outstanding performance. Although blade batteries have obvious market advantages, the development of electric vehicles and energy storage technology still faces many challenges, including the extensive construction of charging infrastructure, increasing mileage, and reducing costs. Therefore, it is necessary to continue to increase investment and promote innovation in technology research and development and application in order to achieve the ambitious goal of sustainable development. Through these efforts, we are expected to witness a greener, more efficient and economical power future.
